Self-checkout lanes are one of the greatest modern conveniences. And also one of the most chaotic at the most inconvenient times. On a good day, you can skip the long lines, dodge the small talk, and avoid waiting behind someone shopping for what looks like a family of ten. It's a dream for introverts and anyone who's just trying to grab three things and get out.

But when it's busy, there's suddenly a line of people breathing down your neck while you fumble to scan a lemon. The pressure is real. And heaven forbid you need help from the one store clerk on duty. It always takes forever for them to notice you as you awkwardly stare daggers into their side, and when they do finally get over to you, somehow their little key fob never works on the first try.
